PLEASE NOTE IPHONE AND ANDROID APPS: There are "client" versions of this superior audio system available for iPhones and Androids. They're in the App Stores under Ventrilode for iPhone, and Ventriloid for Android. Ventrilode for iPhone has a $5 "Plus" version which enables speech without having to press an onscreen microphone icon. The Android version is, I hear, free. The first thing you'd do is install them. Then open them. The setup for these is much simpler. After opening for the first time, you should have an on-screen prompt to add a new server. Only the first and fourth screenshots below in these instructions apply, or you can just use the following information if you prefer:
Username: Your Name [so we know who's speaking]
Server Name: Typefrag
Server Hostname or IP: pearl.typefrag.com
Server Port: 8370
That's pretty much all there is to it. The only thing that will keep you from being able to use it is having typed something wrong in the above setup fields. Remember with the free iPhone version you have to press the prominently displayed microphone in order to speak, and release it when not speaking.
For all our gatherings, this is just magnificent sound...puts us in the room together. Unless you know how to turn on your computer's Echo Cancellation, you'll need headphones or a headset, because we'll hear ourselves through your speakers. The other option is a Push To Talk method, which is very easy to activate in the software, making it so you won't need headphones or a headset. So, without further ado, click here to download the necessary software. Once you've downloaded and installed that software, follow these directions.
If you're have problems getting this set up, post an issue in this forum and we'll arrange to get you the help you need.
Start Ventrilo. The icon is a dude with a headset and goggles. This is the first screen you'll see:
Click the arrow button to the right corresponding to the User Name. Then you'll see this box:
You'll get a little input window. Type your first name there, so we know who's in the class. Click OK. Back on the screen above, you can also type something into the Phonetic field if you'd like, but there's no practical reason for it. Then click OK.
Back on this screen, click the arrow button corresponding to the Server field and you'll see the Connection Editor screen, which is the next image down:
Clicking the New button gives you a little window to name the server. Just name it Typefrag and click OK. In the Hostname or IP field type "pearl.typefrag.com," as shown above. Type 8370 in the Port Number field. Make the Password be anything you want it to be. Leave Default Channel blank, and uncheck what you DON'T want happening with the rest of the options. Then click OK. You'll be back to the first screen
Now click the Setup button and follow these steps.
Then click OK. Now you'll have the first screen again. You should see that the main window now has a server available.
Just click the Connect button and you'll see this screen:
If you get a green speaker at normal conversation volume, you should be good to go. If not, let us know in this forum and we'll get you the help you need.
